Obituary – Miss Mary Helen Johnson
One of Wath’s best known residents, Miss Mary Helen Johnson, of Thornhill, Fitzwilliam Street, died on Saturday at the age of 86.
Miss Johnson had lived in Wath all her life and was one of the first women members of the local Education Sub-Committee. She was the first superintendent of the District Nurses’ Home at Wath and for a long time was a member of the Parish Church Working Party, of which she was founder.
An active church worker, Miss Johnson was formerly a member of the Parish Church and was the first superintendent of St. James’s Sunday School. She was a member of one or Wath’s best known families and the house in which she lived was built by her father.
Miss Johnson was the first associate of the Girls’ Friendly Society at the Parish Church.
The funeral took place at Wath Cemetery on Tuesday, the Rev. L. E. Meredith, former Vicar of Wath, officiating, assisted by the Rev. F. J. Mace (curate-in-charge). The service was choral, three hymns and the 23rd Psalm being sung. Mr. and Mrs. F. Johnson (brother and sister-in-law) were unable to attend.
