Many Mourners at Wath Parish Church Funeral

Describing him as a “great man in his profession”, the Vicar of Wath, the Rev. J. H. Oxer paid tribute at the funeral service held at Wath Parish Church on July 3rd, of Mr. W. Green, M.B.E., of Fitzwilliam Street, Wath, formerly chief chemist of the National Coal Board’s benzole refinery plant at Manvers Main Colliery. Mr. Green, who was 65 in January, died suddenly on June 30th.

A native of Sheffield, Mr. Green was educated at the, old Central Secondary School, Sheffield, and took part-time studies at Sheffield University. He worked at plants at various ‘Collieries before going to the old Manvers Main Colliery Company as chief chemist in 1916.

Blinded In 1917

In 1917 Mr. Green was involved in an accident at the laboratory which finally caused loss of his sight. He returned to work after about 12 months.

He had technical control of the benzole refinery plant for over 20 years, and was transferred to the new plant in 1956 as chief chemist. He was a former president of the Coke Oven Managers’ Association and Chairman of the Midland section, Mr, Green was awarded the M.B,E. in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

He leaves a widow and one daughter, husband, Mr H Cooper BB.FC., is technical control manager of an optical glassworks at Saint Asaph, North Wales

” Almost A Blessing “

Mr. Oxer said there was a tendency to say what more he might have accomplished but for his handicap.

He was given the power to use that terrible affliction and to turn it into almost a blessing,” he went on, adding that Mr. Green was held in great affection from every direction.

Following the service cremation took place at Sheffield.
