A Preponderance of Bowling Feats

Saturdays wickets, such as were not entirely threatened with the gloom of rain, turned the ball rapidly and awkwardly and the Honours Board in South Yorkshire cricket featured a preponderance of bowling feats of considerable excellence.

The Sheffield wicket that helped Ellis Robinson and Johnny Wardle to scatter Sussex produced figures of 18.3-10-17-6 for Wardle and 19-9–27-4 for Robinson

Only Hemsworth in Division One and Swinton in Division Two retain their hundred percent record in the South Riding League, Shire green being defeated by Mitchell’s and Bentley being a victim of the weather in the drawn game at Wath.

Between the Showers.

Denaby 55 for 3 v Elsecar

Not more than 75 min play was possible in the Denaby – Elsecar Yorkshire Council game at Denaby, but the start was delayed 35 min by a heavy thunderstorm which broke over the ground shortly before the game was due to start.

Elsecar won the toss and put Denaby into bat and when the final storm came caused the match to be abandoned. Denaby had lost three wickets for 55 runs. Only, J Munden (21 not out) faced with confidence the bowling of Dobson, Hudson and Cory. The ball rose considerably.

Long Lane’s Turning

Frickley 130 Mexborough 116

After losing five Yorkshire Council matches in a row, Frickley defeated Mexborough by 14 runs at South, Elmsall on Saturday to record their second win. Good batting by A Edgar (46) and E Leighton (25), who constructed more than half the total between them, was mainly responsible for Frickley’s 130. Next highest scorers were L booth (18) and J Smart, who hit two sixes and a four in a whirlwind 17.

There were fireworks when B Williams took over the Mexborough bowling. He took five for eight. While R Hydes had four for 39.

H Vickers (15) and R H Smith (29) had an opening partnership of 42 for Mexborough, there was a collapse when F. Kevin’s and Jean Liddell took four wickets with consecutive balls – two each with their last and first deliveries of the over. C Lawton (11) and F Godfrey (23) stemmed the tide, and when the last pair, Barnes (14 not out) and R Hydes (nine) got together the score was 97. There are hopes were dashed when K Whitehouse bowled Hydes. Liddle (four for 38) and Keverns (three for 24) were Frickley’s most successful bowlers

Spoiled by Rain.

Wath 145 v Bentley

Rain spoiled Wath’s home game with Bentley Colliery. The start was delayed and although there was no further interference during the Wath innings, heavy rain during the tea interval caused the match to be abandoned. The Wath batsmen were confronted with a drying wicket, with occasional balls rearing rather disconcertingly.

C Heaton (14) and R Cutts (17) gave them a useful start after which GE Hepplewhite batted freely in hitting up 54. J. C Heaton, after an early life, batted well for 23, and the innings realised 145. H Bibby, a tall right hand medium bowler, caused most trouble. He kept a good length throughout and finished with five for 38.

Cooling – the Star.

Michell Main 127 for 4 Shiregreen 125

With 64 not out, Roy Cooling, the Mansfield and former Barnsley football, was the Mitchell Main star against Shiregreen at Wombwell on Saturday. Roy also took four for 54. Shiregreen opened with 125, the chief scorers being H Pears (35) and K Phelan (34).

Mitchell main’s reply was 127 for four. A Moore and J Harston each scored 16
