Civil Defence Award

After 40 years work for Civil Defence in Wath, a 62 year old Wath man, Mr Albert Wilkinson, of 90 Cemetery Road, has received a medal for his services.

After being wounded in France during the First World War, Mr Wilkinson left the 1/5 York and Lancaster Regiment and joined the Civil Defence in 1917, since when he has been an A.R.P. Warden.

He had to relinquish his voluntary work some 15 months ago, owing to illness.

From 1917 until 1942 Mr Wilkinson was employed at Wath Main Colliery, and later worked at the Railway Loco shed for a further five years. He has not worked for some time due to ill health.

His wife, Mrs S Wilkinson, died last March. He has three daughters and three sons, all married and 14 grandchildren.
