Cricket Club’s Report Pretty Much
“As You Were” for the New Season
The Yorkshire Council season which opens on April 20 does not get underway for local clubs until the following week when Denaby and Cadeby have a home fixture with Thorncliffe and Swinton meet Wombwell.
Dearne and Wath come into the picture in the following week (May 4) and Mexborough also enter the lists with a home fixture with Brodsworth.
Mexborough – Newcomers Welcomed
Mexborough players will again include Hempstead, Vickers, Holmes, Jenkinson, Curtis, Richardson, James Critchley, Belden, Hutchinson, Whitehead, Davis, Crummack, Harris and Bob and T Hydes.
It is hoped that Tompkinson will be available later in the season and the club welcomes back from the Forces G.Snodgrass. D Cobbett and D Beeson are newcomers. Improvements have been carried out to the ground, and practices will begin next Thursday.
Dearne
Several members of Dearne have already taking advantage of the concrete pit for practice, and the club hopes that as many as possible will turn up on Saturday and again on April 20 when, weather permitting, practice will take place on the ground.
The first 11 hope to include at least two newcomers – a batsmen and a wicket-keeper – batsmen. Several promising youngsters are available to strengthen the reserve side.
Denaby and Cadeby – A New Pavilion
Big event at Denaby and Cadeby is the erection of the new Pavilion, a CISWO scheme, which will cost over £4000. It is hoped the building will be ready for use in May. Dick Lawley of Mexborough, and Jack Kerry Swinton, will be joining Denaby and Cadeby ranks this time, but otherwise last season’s players will all be there again. It is hoped to start practising next week. The Reserves, who went through last season unbeaten, are again looking forward to a good season.
Wath
Wath had been keeping a wary eye on the ground. Substance caused a “basin” on the boundary out for last year began working into the centre. The movement has affected several parts of the ground but there are signs that it is steadied. Some home fixtures are to be put off towards the end of last season, due to this fall in ground level, but the club is hoping there will be no recurrence of that problem this time.
Team position is reported to be very much “as you were.”
Swinton
Good news for Swinton is that the ground improvement scheme is complete and the club will be at “the Heights” again this season. They will miss a familiar figure in Harry Amos who as readers will recall has moved to Nottingham to take a new railway appointment. White will also be an absentee. Practice will begin next week and secretary Mr H Shaw extends an invitation to anyone interested.
