Four will be Going to Oxford and Cambridge
In October four Wath Grammar School students will be entering Oxford and Cambridge Universities. They left school at Christmas to take up employment until that time.
Michael Hargate, Martin Happs and Jack Harris will be going to Oxford and Graham Bentham to Cambridge.
Was Head Boy
Michael Hargate (17) of Barnsley Road, Darfield, was head boy from September to Christmas when he left to begin student teaching at the Park Road Section of the school. His place at Merton College Oxford was open to him last September, but he felt it would be wiser to wait until this year. He will be reading history for an honours degree.
Entering the school at 10 he gained nine GCE O levels passes at 14 and, moving from the fourth form to the sixth, he gained four A-level passes.
Also reading history at Merton College will be Martin Happs (18) of 14 Holly Grove, Wath He is at the moment soon teaching at Rawmarsh, Rosehill Junior School. He left school at Christmas after having gained 8 O level and four A-level GC passes. He has for the past four years been a key member of the South Yorkshire theatre for youths and is auditioning for this year’s production. He has been in many of the schools productions and is hoping to carry on his interest by joining the drama section at Oxford.
Graham Bentham, of 14 Highfield Rd, Swinton, will start a three-year honours degree course in geography at Selwyn College, Cambridge. He attended Prince William County primary school Swinton, and that was, so he obtained eight GCE O level passes and four A-level passes. He is employed in a temporary post as a clerk by the Ministry of Labour. He was at one time captain of the junior rugby team, and two years ago was chosen to represent schools in the Don and Dearne area in the Yorkshire School’s Athletic Championships. After University he hopes to make a career in Town and Country Planning in the south.
Jack Harris will read law at St Catherine’s College, Oxford. He is currently working at the Employment Exchange in Rotherham. He gained eight O-levels and three A-level GC passes that the Grammar School. It is believed he will be the first student from the school to enter Saint Catherine’s.
