Invitation to the Palace

Mary Carr has always thought how exciting it would be to see the other side of the gates of Buckingham Palace – and now her dreams are to come true.

For this week, Mary, of 2, Masefield Road, West Melton, has received her official invitation to attend the Queen’s Spring Garden Party on June 2nd.

Mary (32), has been involved in the Girl Guide movement for most of her life and it is because of her interest and enthusiasm in this sphere that she has been chosen to represent this area.

She said this week “it is Guide Jubilee Year and the Queen decided to invite an extra number of Guides to the palace. I am thrilled that I have been chosen.

I saw people leaving the Garden Party when I was in London last year and I thought then how exciting it would be to see the other side of those gates – I never thought I would get the chance.”

Mary joined the Brownies when she was very young and “flew up” to the Guides. At 15 she left the movement for a short time, but returned to take over as Assistant Leader of the Wath All Saints Company. In 1961 she became Guide Leader.

Mary, a N.C.B. employee, is District Secretary and Guide Camp Secretary.
