Mexborough Captain Shines

Mexborough  111 for 7  Wath  110

Mexborough added Wath to their list of victims on Saturday at Mexborough winning by three wickets.  Mexborough were without J. Mullen, their professional bowler and H. Prew was brought in from the second team.  Wath made 110 (S Ellis 33, R. Cutts 18, C. Walton 20).  For Mexborough, Padley took 4 for 48, G. Howarth 3 for 24 and B. Pew 3 for 28.  Mexborough’s skipper, C. Wilkinson, fielded brilliantly and also played a captain’s part in Mexborough’s innings of 111 for 7. He made 47 and a lively innings by L. Dawson (19) helped him to take the score to 38 for 2.  At 95 for 6 G. Howarth made a steady 15 not out to make a Mexborough victory certain. For Wath R. Cutts bowled very well and in 2 overs he had 3 for 7.

Runs Scarce at Denaby

Denaby & Cadeby 59  Hickleton  70

In past seasons the meeting between Denaby and Hickleton has usually produced a lot of runs, but Saturday’s meeting was the lowest scoring game for a long time. When Hickleton had completed their innings it looked as if Denaby would carry off the honours.  Hickleton’s total of 70 was due to the bowling of Porter (3 for 20), Newton 2 for 28) and Warde (4 for 17). But for the brothers Riley the score would have been even less.  J. Riley had 32 and H Riley 15.  Denaby were soon in trouble, losing their first six wickets for only 11 runs. Then Bateson (17) and Allen (13) stopped the rot, but Hickleton won by 11 runs.  For Hickleton J. Riley took 4 for 31 and Lockwood 6 for 25.
