Midland League.

Position Unchanged in Race For Honours.
Away Teams Do Well

Five of the away teams were successful in the matches played in the Midland League on Saturday. Lincoln City Reserves dropped point at home, while Mansfield Town, who were weakly represented, drew at Mexborough, so there is no change in the position at the head of the League.

After a very interesting game, crowded with incidents, Worksop Town were beaten 3 —1 at home by Boston. The visitors led 2 —0 at the interval. Richardson diverting shot from Hoyland into his own goal, and Hoyland securing the second. Fred Moore reduced the arrears, but Hoyland, who was the live wire of visitors’ attack, restored Boston’s advantage.

Denaby United, after losing 3 —0 at Chesterfield a week earlier, reversed that result the return match at on Saturday. From start to finish Denaby were superior in defence and attack, and their lead at half-time of the goal scored by Green was subsequently increased by Betteridge and Kelly. The visitors were saved from a heavier reverse by the fine goalkeeping of Peake and the hard work of Whitworth. Denaby’s new winger, Betteridge, made a most creditable debut.

Barnsley-Nottingham Duel.

Barnsley had the better of the argument with Notts County on Saturday, for while the Second League side won at Oakwell, the Reserves shared the points at Meadow Lane. Notts had a very strong side in the field, and they had plenty of opportunities of winning but they were weak in front of goal. A goalless draw resulted.

A reshuffled Grantham team lost 1 – 0 to Frickley Colliery at South El this msall. The visitors opened promisingly, and kept the Frickley defence busy, but the colliery team made a remarkable recovery, and with a great from 40 yards range Williams gave them the lead.

Mexborough Athletic and Mansfield Town drew 1 – 1 at Hampden Road, both goals coming in the first half, from Flint for Mansfield and Briggs for Mexborough. The second half slacked off both in pace and standard of play. Beaumont, at right back, was the star of the Mexborough defence, and was well covered by Vollans at right-half. Briggs at centre-forward had a bright first half, but fell off after the interval. Higginbottom on the left wing was always a source of danger. Staples, Hogg, Anthony, Flint, and Staniforth were the pick of the visitors.

Lincoln Disappoint.

Wombwell had much bigger share of the game than the score of 3 – 1 in Grimsby s favour would suggest. For the first twenty minutes of the second half Wombwell had complete control, but failed to score. Truswell the Wombwell outside-left, was the outstanding player, and Grimsby were well served their centre-half, Williams. Wright, Williams, and Twill scored for the Town, and Adey for Wombwell.

Poor marksmanship lost Lincoln City Reserves valuable point in their game with Wath Athletic on the Sincil Bank, the result being 2—2. The Junior “Imps,” on the run of the play, ought have won easily. They missed a penalty. Wath deserved a share of spoils for their pluck and persistence. They were two goals in arrears 23 minutes from the ‘end, but drew level. The scorers were Jenkins and Warren for Lincoln, and Murden and F. Moore for Wath.

Hull Reserves gained a 6—3 victory at Staveley. Alexander, who led the Hull attack, scored four of the goals, Murray and White adding the others. Staveley were minus Jenkins, Ashall. Jarret, and Addlington. Eggleshaw, Meads, and Pearce scored for Staveley. Lack defended well for the losers.

More Goals for Cowie.

Scunthorpe were full value for their 2—l win at Newark. The home team had an early goal, shot by Stevenson from 30 yards’ range. _Hoddinott worked hard, but was unlucky with his efforts. There was a complete change after the resumption, Scunthorpe displaying a great improvement, and Maw equalised within three minutes, and afterwards Wadsworth gave them the lead. Hoddinott failed with penalty kick.

Rotherham United Reserves were completely swamped by York City at Millmoor, the visitors winning 7—2. Rotherham opened the scoring through Hague, and the first half finished with both teams having two goals to their credit. The visitors were dangerous throughout the second half, and Cowie scored three times. Fenoughty and Ranby also added goals.

Gainsborough Trinity easily accounted for Shirebrook by 3—2. In the first half Clark scored for Gainsborough, and Kennedy, who led their attack well, for Shirebrook. In the second half, however, matters ran in Trinity’s favour, and the framework of the visitors’ goal was struck at least half a dozen times. Myers restored Gainsborough’s lead, and Shaw scored a third from the penalty spot, but missed with a second penalty. Kennedy again replied.

Loughborough turned the tables on Doncaster Rovers’ Reserves on Saturday, when they won 4 – 1. A rearranged side at the last moment upset the balance of the Doncaster side. Tippett was the best of the forwards, and McConnell played well at half. Bussingham and Smith made pair of robust backs. Hunter, Hallam, Orton, and Scott scored for Loughborough, and Swift for Doncaster.
