Death Three Weeks After Retirement
The death occurred on Sunday, only three weeks after his retirement of Mr. George Cook, of ” Coverack , ” Campsall Fields Lane, Wath-on-Dearne.
Mr Cook, who was 65, spent 52 years in the mines and retired on December after 24 years as undermanager in the Parkgate Seam of Wath Main Colliery.
Mr Cook had served under six seven managers who have had charge of Wath.
He left the colliery to take up the duties of under-manager Cadeby Colliery shortly after the 1912 explosion, and after holding the position for two years returned to Wath Main as overman for a short period, being appointed under-manager on January 1st. 1916.
After his retirement his health did not permit of his attending a presentation ceremony which had been arranged in his honour, and Mr. M. C. Martyn, general manager of the Colliery, personally visited Mr. and Mrs. Cook at their home to make the presentations. These consisted of a cheque from the staff and workmen and a gold wristlet watch for Mrs. Cook, which were very appreciatively acknowledged by the recipients.
