Mr. J. Butterfield

An Old Wath Tradesman

The death occurred on Sunday after a brief illness of Mr. Joseph Butterfield, “Thornleigh,” High Street, Wath.

Mr. Butterfield, who was 75 years old, was a native of Wath and after apprenticeship at Barnsley in the meat trade, commenced business in Wath in1884. He was a foundation member of the Wath and District Butchers’ Association, becoming its president and on several occasions representing the Association at the National Federation conferences. He retired about 19 years ago, landing over the business to his sons.

In his younger days, he was well known in South Yorkshire sports circles. He was especially interested in rowing and an enthusiastic member of the now defunct Wath Rowing Club.

He served for some years in the Yorkshire Dragoons. In recent years he had been actively associated with the Wath Trinity Methodist Church.
