Mr. W. J. Lord.
We regret to have to record the death of Mr. W. J. Lord, the financial and general secretary of the Wath Athletic Club, and one of the most efficient guardians of sport in the district.
Mr. Lord passed through a long illness and only once during the last twelve months got down to the Athletic Ground.
He succeeded Mr. Fred Cheetham in the office of financial secretary of the club and no better man could have been found for the job. He was formerly in charge of the pithead baths- at the colliery but took over the Star Inn—the Wath club’s former headquarters—just over two years ago.
Since his appointment to the secretaryship of the Wath Club he devoted himself so completely to the development of the club that he barely missed a meeting of any section, and had the whole of the club’s finances and general affairs at his fingers-ends.
His personality and ability were largely responsible for bringing many of the more important athletic events of all kinds to Wath.
His wife was a daughter of Mr. A. Bramham, a member of the Wath Urban Council. At the funeral on Tuesday there was a large attendance.
