Obituary – John Ellis
The death occurred on Saturday of Mr. John Ellis (67) of Newhill, Wath-on-Dearne.
A native of Wath, Mr. Ellis worked for 52 years at Manvers Main Colliery. He was a keen cricketer and, like his grandfather and father, a staunch supporter of the old Wath Cricket Club as well as the present Athletic club. He played both cricket and football for Wath.
For many years he sat on the Ground Committee of the Wath Athletic Club, as well as the cricket and football committees. When the Yorkshire County Cricket team opened the Wath ground, Jack Ellis obtained the highest score for the Wath team, and was the first Wath player to bowl and bat on the ground. He was a popular member of the Wath Central Club.
He is survived by a widow, seven sons and one daughter.
