Mexborough and Swinton Times August 5, 1938
The death on Sunday at his home, “Fieldsend,” Stumpcross Road, Wath, of Mr. George Steer, has robbed Wath and district of a citizen who had spent the greater part of his life in its service.
Mr. Steer, who was 81, came to Wath from North Wales in 1887 to take over the headship of the new Victoria School, and he remained there until his retirement in 1922. Mrs. Steer, his wife, was headmistress at the same school for two years longer. Their son, Mr. Harold Steer, is the present head of the Brampton Ellis-Senior School.
It is a sad coincidence that Mr. Steer died on the sixteenth anniversary of his retirement. No one can fail to ‘appreciate the splendid service that he had given in the years since giving up active work to all forms of sport, social and educational activities locally.
Since coming to Wath he had been a prominent member of the Mechanics’ Institute and he was also one of the original members of Wath Athletic Club. He was one of the first secretaries of the cricket section of the club and was for many years secretary of the bowling and tennis sections. He retained his interest in the club to the end and his services to the cricket section were recognised twelve months ago when he was unanimously elected a patron.
Mr. Steer was a member of the Wath Urban Council for eleven years, being chairman once.
He also took an interest in the club movement at Wath and was for over ten years president of the Hollies Club. The esteem in which he was held at the Victoria School is evidenced by .the number of letters of sympathy received by the widow from his former students all over the country.
Probably one of the most respected men in the district, one of Mr. Steer’s chief characteristics that endeared him to so many people for so many years was his capacity for seeing nothing but the best he came into contact.
