Mr. William Rawson

Wath people will be sad to hear of the death of Mr. William Rawson, who for 40 years was very closely involved in the work of the Labour Party at Wath.  Mr. Rawson, of 7, Newhill Road, Wath, had been ill for several months. He died at Mexborough Montagu Hospital on Saturday, aged 72.

Born in West Melton Mr. Rawson moved to Wath at an early age and lived there until his death.  Educated at the National School and Victoria School, Wath, he went to work at Manvers Main Colliery where he stayed until in his late 30’s.  He then moved to Wath Grammar School, where he was groundsman until his retirement.

Mr. Rawson will be best remembered for his political work in the town and throughout Yorkshire. He was an active member of the Labour Party for 40 years and Chairman for ten years. For 15 years he was auditor for both the Labour Party at Wath and for the Divisional Labour Party. His union was N.U.P.E. and for 23 years he was chairman. He was area representative of the Union for conferences held in Leeds.

Mr. Rawson’s widow said “My husband’s hobbies were solely his political work. He was a devoted husband and family man and will be greatly missed.”  He leaves six sons and two daughters, who are all married, and nineteen grandchildren. The funeral took place at Wath Parish Church on Wednesday.
