Military Cross for Wath Major
Major H.C.Worrall (R.F.A.) of Wath on Dearne, has been awarded the Military Cross for gallantry displayed in the following circumstances:
“Seeing the enemy attempting to man an anti-tank gun for use against the advancing infantry, he at once opened fire on it and knocked it out. He then turned his gun on a trench which he infantry were approaching, and caused the enemy in it to surrender without fighting.
Both these actions were entirely on his own initiative, and he was under shell-fire throughout.”
Major Worrall, who is attached to the Rotherham Howitzer Brigade, had seen considerable service in the Army, chiefly in lndia, South Africa, and Ireland, before the war broke out.
He went to France with the “Contemptibles,” and had served continuously in that theatre, except for a period in 1915 when he was recalled to England to assist in the formation .and training of the -Rotherham howitzer Brigade. He was mentioned in dispatches last May.
