Wath Lady’s Death

Widow of Col. Tom Mitchell

Another link with a fine old South Yorkshire family has been severed by the death of Mrs. E. Spencer Mitchell , which occurred at her home, Sandygate House, Wath-on- Dearne, on Wednesday, at the age of 66.

Mrs. Mitchell was the widow of Col. Thomas Wilfred Howe Mitchell, who died in March, 1921, at the age of 57, and who was for some years commanding officer of the 5th Territorial Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment, and chairman of the Mitchell Main Colliery Company.

Mrs. Mitchell was born at Silkstone Fall, the daughter of Mr. John Adshead, a Macclesfield colliery proprietor.

Her mother, Maria Spencer, was a member of a well-known Yorkshire family, which is now represented by but one descendant. Upon her marriage to Col. Mitchell she came to reside at West Melton, and subsequently (in 1966) to Sandigate House, Wath.

Col. and Mrs. Mitchell had two children, a son and daughter, and the greatest sorrow of their lives was the loss of their son, who was killed in the Great War.

Their daughter is the wife of Mr. H. Wentworth Smith, of Emley Woodhouse, Huddersfield, principal owner of the Finningley Gravel Company, Ltd.

Mrs. Mitchell was very fond of her home and garden and after the death of her husband Mrs. Mitchell took a keen interest in the social life of the 5th York and Lancester, and attended many of their functions. She was a very kind friend to the British Legion and was president of the Wombwell women’s branch. She will be greatly missed by a host of friends, gentle and simple, in the Wath district.

The funeral takes place at Wath today (Friday), and the interment will be preceded by a service in the Wath Parish Church at 2-30.
