Wath Lose At Maltby By 30 Runs

May 1959

South Yorkshire Times, May 9th, 1959

Maltby miners welfare pulled off a great Yorkshire Council win at home, beating Wath by 330 runs. Maltby can thank Trevor’s gelding for this confidence building start to the season. With some powerful and accurate pace bowling, he claimed six wickets for 34.

Maltby batted first, but were soon up against it, losing their first wicket for only three months, and were four down with only 43 on the board. But a brisk innings from Keith Blackburn, who paved his way cautiously for 21, And 23 nicely taken letter from Roy Morton improvised the state of the Score considerably.

Thorpe, Wath’s most consistent bowler, took five for 50 in a fine spell of medium paced stuff.

Maltby’s final total of 110 did not seem big enough on a rather placid wicket, but Skeldon had not been reckoned with.

Half Wath’s batting strength was returned to the pavilion with only 38 runs to their credit – and Skeldon had claimed three of the wickets. In fact the only Wath man to offer any kind of resistance was Breslin who was finally caught by green of Skeldon for 33.

Wath then crumbled to a rather poor defeat, their last six batsmen added only 28 runs between them, And the whole side was dismissed for 80. Green, Maltby’s other pace man, claimed three for 20.
