Mr. A. Shaw
Well-known Wath Man’s Sudden Death
The death occurred suddenly, at his home, Delaville, Sandygate ‘Wath, on Tuesday of Mr. Alfred Shaw, managing director of West Melton Brick and Fire Clay Co., Ltd. He was 72. Only an hour before his death, Mr. Shaw conversed with a friend over the telephone, but he had not enjoyed good – health for some time.
Mr. Shaw was a native of Wath, and was well-known in the district. He began work at Manvers Main Colliery as a boy, and when he left in 1915, held the position of underground manager. In his youth he was connected with Wath Wesleyan Church Sunday School.
For about 20 years he had been secretary of Wath-on Dearne Property Owners’ Association and had been managing director of West Melton Brick and Fire Clay Co., Ltd., for about the same length of time. Mr. Shaw was also a member of the committee, and a former President of Rotherham and District Property Owners’ Association.
He took great interest in the Mexborough Montagu Hospital and had done a large amount of work for the institution. He is survived by a widow and grown-up family of two sons and three daughters. Mrs. Shaw, who comes from Sheffield, was formerly Miss Edith Alice Rhodes, a teacher at Wath National School. Mr. and Mrs. Shaw celebrated their Golden Wedding on December 1st, 1942. The funeral takes place at Wath Parish Church to-morrow (Saturday), at 2 p.m.
